photographs which give some idea of the various forms of nullahs. The larger ones are almost invariably constructed with side walls of rubble masonry, built in lime mortar and pointed in cement mortar, and inverts of lime concrete finished on top with a layer of cement rendering or fine cement concrete. In the case of a few of the largest and most important, the inverts are lined with ashlar masonry, 10 inches in depth, set and grouted in cement mortar.
The object of the training work originally carried out was to protect property from the serious damage caused by heavy rainstorms, which frequently produced landalips and washed down large boulders in the case of the untrained channels. It was also found useful for enabling building lots to be laid out with a greater degree of regularity than was otherwise possible. During the past 6 or 7 years however the chief object of the work has been to remove the breeding-places of the anopheles mosquito and many channels which had hitherto been allowed to remain in their natural condition have now been trained for that purpose only.
